The newly released Risk Report for Norwegian Aquaculture 2025, published yesterday by the Institute of Marine Research, highlights that fish mortality, sea lice, and escapes remain significant challenges for the industry.
We know that fish farmers work hard every day to create a healthy and sustainable production, but today’s open cages present challenges that are difficult to solve.
At Bluegreen, we have great respect for the efforts made in the industry, and we want to contribute with technology that can support fish farmers, improve fish welfare, and ensure profitable operations.
The Risk Report reveals that 60 million farmed salmon died in 2024, underscoring the complex biological and environmental challenges the industry is facing. This is not just an economic issue but also an animal welfare concern that no one in the industry wants.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority has previously set a target of a maximum of 5% mortality. For many fish farmers, this may seem difficult to achieve with today’s open cages. That’s why we want to demonstrate how new production methods can provide better control and help reduce these challenges—without compromising profitability.
Marine Donut is not a replacement for current aquaculture methods but rather a supplement for those seeking greater control over environmental factors such as sea lice, disease, and escapes. Its closed structure allows us to eliminate some of the biggest risk factors identified in the report:
🤝 Sea lice and disease – Marine Donut’s closed design prevents lice from coming into contact with the fish, thereby reducing the need for chemical treatments.
🤝 High mortality – The full-scale test with SalMar showed an extremely low mortality rate (below 1%). This demonstrates that, with the right technology and management, we can collectively reduce fish losses in the industry.
🤝 Escapes and genetic impact on wild fish – We recognize that escapes are a major concern for the industry. Marine Donut’s closed construction eliminates this risk.
🤝 Environmental impact – The report highlights that waste from open cages can lead to excessive nutrient accumulation in the ocean. Marine Donut collects waste and reduces this impact.

At Bluegreen, we deeply respect the hard work put into the industry, and we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, we believe that technology can play a crucial role in reducing risks for both fish and fish farmers.
Our goal is to collaborate with fish farmers to develop solutions that provide greater predictability, improved fish welfare, and sustainable profitability.
Feel free to contact us at Bluegreen. We believe in collaboration, dialogue, and solutions that create value—for the industry, the environment, and the fish.
