Investing in Expertise: New Employees Attend Welding Course

We love plastic welding, but we realize it’s a specialized field. That's why we train apprentices and hire people with other technical certifications, teaching them the art of plastic fabrication. Part of this training takes place during welding courses.

Recently, a group of new hires participated in an in-house welding course organized by Stitec. The course runs for a full workweek, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and concludes with both a theoretical and practical exam.

“The welding course combines theory and practice to give participants a solid understanding of both the materials and techniques used in plastic welding,” explains Elg Ragnar Thunes, HR and HSEQ Manager at Bluegreen.

During the training, participants are introduced to various methods, including rod (hot air) welding, extruder welding, mirror fusion, and electrofusion welding. Upon passing the exam, participants receive welding certificates, ensuring they can now perform work according to industry standards.

Understanding the Theory

The theoretical part begins with basic knowledge of polymers and how they are made – from gas to raw material, then to semi-finished products, which companies like Bluegreen use to create large and small plastic structures.

“Welding theory is another crucial part of the course. We learn about temperature, time, and pressure – all factors that affect the quality of the welding. We also gain insights into how to calculate these parameters to ensure optimal welding,” says Mats Paetz, one of the participants.

Mats has a certificate in carpentry and has worked in the military for 10 years.

“It’s exciting to learn about a new material and production methods,” he says.

Practical Training in Various Welding Techniques

In the practical part of the course, participants are trained in handling different welding equipment and learn how to create strong, durable welds.

“The course concludes with both a theoretical and practical exam. An external assessor evaluates the welding work against specific criteria, including precise measurements and quality assessments,” Thunes explains.

Welding Certificate Upon Successful Completion

With the course completed and the exam passed, our new employees can now rightfully call themselves “plastic welders.” However, to truly master the craft, practice is key, and at Bluegreen, we have a mentoring program where novice welders receive ongoing guidance to perfect their skills.
