The Marine Donut is once again filled with fish. This time, 185,000 happy salmon, each around 3 kg, are swimming in the current inside the "donut".
The second production cycle is well underway at Sekken, outside Molde.
SalMar successfully stocked 185,000 salmon, each around 3 kg. The fish will remain in the Marine Donut until they reach slaughter weight of approximately 5.5 kg.
The first production cycle, completed last autumn, demonstrated strong results:
Low mortality: Only 0.8% of the fish died over the entire production cycle.
Good fish health: Despite entering the system with pancreas disease (PD), the fish showed good overall health and low mortality.
High fish welfare: Extensive monitoring indicated excellent welfare, including observations on skin lesions, cataracts, deformities, gill condition, and stress levels.
Stable water quality: Oxygen, pH, salinity, and temperature were all maintained at good levels. Some challenges with turbidity measurement were identified but had no negative effect on water quality.
Efficient harvest: The system was emptied in October 2024, with 195,000 salmon sent for processing. The harvest went according to plan, with minimal stress for the fish.
Technical performance: Water exchange worked well, and the system was further optimized during operation to enhance performance.
